Britton Tolliver - A Search for the Sky Underneath the Dirt
March 27 - May 1, 2010
Opening reception Saturday, March 27, 6-9pm
Where does abstraction and geometry meet? In what field do they cease to be independent systems and gel into one hybrid - something new altogether? Britton Tolliver's idiosyncratic paintings are deeply rooted in this intersection. Neither solely abstract nor geometric, his paintings really entertain another idea, which is difficult to pin down. It is in the amalgamation of these different ideas and processes that Tolliver's paintings find their own identity, somewhere in the middle of both.
Britton Tolliver's work has been exhibited in group shows throughout the U.S. in venues such as Philip Slein Gallery (St. Louis, MO), Richard Heller Gallery (Santa Monica, CA), William King Museum (Abingdon, VA) and Contemporary Art Institute (Detroit, MI) among others. Tolliver received his MFA from Cranbrook Academy in 2006 and his BFA from East Tennessee State University in 2004. This will be his first solo exhibition at Kinkead Contemporary and later in 2010 he will debut another solo exhibition in Chicago at GOLDEN.
